It consists of 12 chapters and covers pre-1900 numbers, ancestral and subsidiary corporations, major affiliates, and then the 4-4-0, 4-6-0, 2-6-0, 2-8-0, 4-8-0, 0-4-0 and tank engines, 0-6-0, and 0-8-0 classes of engines. Extensive roster detail is presented, including technical specifications on each engine and ultimate disposition. The book is profusely illustrated, with all types illustrated with photos and most classes illustrated with multiple photos. Where possible, builders photos and in-use photos are presented to assist in understanding developments over time. 580 pages, approximately 600 photos, hardbound. The second printing has a sewn binding.
